A special tribute to highly respected New Zealand radio sailor, designer and sailmaker Ian Vickers has been unveiled at Wattle Farm in Auckland.
The Ian Vickers Tribute Board was created by Ian's home club, the North Shore Radio Yacht Squadron, to recognise his considerable contribution to radio sailing in New Zealand and internationally.
With Wattle Farm considered a particularly suitable location for the tribute to be permanently displayed and enjoyed by the wider radio sailing community, the club was approached about providing it with a home. Wattle Farm was delighted to accept, describing it as a privilege to be entrusted with the display.
At the centre of the tribute are sails signed by competitors at the 2026 IOM World Championship in the United Kingdom, accompanied by photographs and a record of Ian's achievements in the IOM class.
Ian was widely known throughout the international IOM community for his success as a competitor and for his significant contribution to yacht and sail design. The many signatures and personal messages incorporated into the display are a fitting reflection of the respect and friendships he developed throughout the sport.
The unveiling brought together members of the New Zealand radio sailing community and was followed by an afternoon of IOM racing at Wattle Farm.
The tribute now has a fitting permanent home where it can be seen by club members and visiting sailors, providing a lasting recognition of Ian Vickers and his contribution to radio sailing.
