International Marblehead Class
The International Marblehead (M) Class is one of radio sailing's most exciting development classes, combining moderate size and light weight with exceptional speed, manoeuvrability and stability. Often referred to as the "Formula One" of radio sailing, the Marblehead provides high-performance racing while allowing considerable freedom for designers, builders and sailors to explore different approaches to yacht design and development.
The Marblehead is governed by an IRSA International Class Rule that is essentially a box rule with relatively few restrictions. The class has a maximum overall length of 1,290 mm and maximum measured sail area of 0.5161 m², while providing considerable freedom in hull design, appendages, rigs, construction methods and materials. This freedom has produced a wide variety of successful designs throughout the class's long history.
Marbleheads were among the first radio sailing classes to embrace high-technology construction, with carbon fibre and advanced composite construction becoming established during the early 1990s. A modern Marblehead will usually be constructed almost entirely from carbon fibre, including the hull, foils, spars and many fittings, producing a remarkably light, stiff and responsive racing yacht.
While designers have continued to refine hulls, foils and rigs, the fundamental performance of the Marblehead has remained remarkably enduring. Many designs dating back several decades remain capable of competing successfully in modern fleets, making the class unusual in allowing well-maintained older boats to remain genuinely competitive.
One of the defining characteristics of the Marblehead is its rig flexibility. Boats can carry a range of rigs and sail plans suited to different wind strengths, allowing sailors considerable freedom to optimise performance for the prevailing conditions.
