International One Metre

iom3-20260827224700-36fe0e.pngThe International One Metre (IOM) is one of the world's most popular and competitive radio sailing classes, raced by sailors in more than 30 countries.

First established in 1988, the IOM was designed around a simple principle – to create a high-performance radio-controlled racing yacht with tightly controlled dimensions and equipment, while still allowing designers and builders scope to develop fast and innovative boats.

At one metre in length, the IOM delivers remarkably close and tactical racing. The boats are responsive, quick and challenging to sail, with many of the same tactical decisions, boat-on-boat situations and racing rules encountered in full-size sailing.

A Controlled Development Class

The IOM is not a strict one-design class. Different hull designs can compete against each other, but construction and equipment are governed by carefully developed class rules designed to control performance and cost.

Hull construction is generally restricted to permitted materials such as wood and glass-reinforced materials, while carbon fibre is permitted in specific components including the fin and rudder. Rig and sail dimensions are also tightly controlled.

One of the defining features of the IOM is its three-rig system. Sailors select from No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 rigs according to the wind strength, allowing the boats to race effectively across a wide range of conditions.

The combination of controlled equipment, sophisticated design and relatively straightforward construction has helped make the IOM popular with both home builders and professional boat builders.

Competitive boats are available as completed yachts, kits or plans, and the class continues to attract sailors ranging from newcomers to some of the world's most experienced radio sailing competitors.

IOM racing takes place at club, state, national and international level, culminating in major international championships that attract leading sailors from around the world.

The class is internationally administered by the International One Metre International Class Association (IOMICA) under the framework of International Radio Sailing.
