Jerwood Claims DF65 QLD Crown in Sunshine Coast Showdown
24–25 May | Sunshine Coast Radio Sailing Club
The 2025 DF65 Queensland State Championships brought together 35 skippers from four states for two days of competitive and often unpredictable racing at the Sunshine Coast Radio Sailing Club. Light and shifty breezes tested both skill and patience, with conditions fluctuating between calm patches and sudden 30-degree shifts in wind direction, demanding sharp focus and quick tactical thinking from all involved.
Emerging as the standout performer was Western Australia’s Nick Jerwood, whose long journey across the country was rewarded with a dominant victory. Sailing with impressive consistency across the 13 races, Jerwood never finished worse than sixth and claimed the championship with just 22 points—a performance that drew admiration from both competitors and spectators. His wife, Janet Jerwood, also competed strongly, finishing 16th and underlining the couple’s sailing pedigree.
Local favourite Geoff Morris used his deep knowledge of the Sunshine Coast conditions to secure second place with 32 points, reading the subtle shifts better than most and remaining a constant presence at the front of the fleet. Andrew Gibbs completed the podium after a strong closing series, timing his late charge perfectly to edge out a tightly packed group of competitors.
Defending champion Mike Jefferys saw his title defence unravel early, with equipment issues—including a cracked hull and damaged fin box—forcing him to switch to a backup boat. Despite the challenges, he pushed through to finish sixth, showing true sportsmanship and determination.
Among other notable performances were Gary Metcalfe and Daniel Bergman, who sailed with discipline and consistency to finish fourth and fifth respectively. The event also highlighted the strength and depth of the DF65 class, featuring eight of the nation’s top-ranked sailors and representation from nine clubs across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia.
The regatta was expertly hosted by the Sunshine Coast Radio Sailing Club, whose volunteers and officials delivered a well-run and welcoming event. From race management to scoring and shoreside support, the club earned high praise for its professionalism and hospitality.
With the state championship now in the books, sailors will turn their focus to the upcoming national titles. Whether heading home with silverware or valuable lessons, all who took part will remember this regatta for its spirited competition, friendly atmosphere, and the ever-unpredictable winds of the Sunshine Coast.
