Herb Tyson Memorial Trophy – A Class Regatta

Mar 25, 2025

Eight sailors gathered at Montrose Bay, Hobart for the annual Herb Tyson Memorial Trophy, sailing their A Class boats in light and tricky conditions. While the wind was minimal, there was just enough to complete most of the scheduled races. A welcome relief was the absence of weed, which has been a persistent issue in recent events, allowing for uninterrupted racing.

a2With the light and shifty conditions, eight races were completed before the wind completely died off. A skippers' meeting was called, and it was unanimously agreed to conclude the day early. In a classic twist of sailing fate, a gentle sea breeze filled in just as boats were being packed away—an all-too-familiar occurrence in the sport.

At the top of the fleet, Kyle and Lisa—both fresh off strong performances at the Nationals—put on a masterclass, each winning four races. The battle between them was intense, but Kyle edged out Lisa by a single point, taking the Herb Tyson Memorial Trophy with 8 points, while Lisa secured second place with 9 points.

Phil Turnbull had a consistent day, regularly finishing in the top four and securing third place overall with 21 points. The midfield saw incredibly tight racing, with only six points separating third through sixth place, making for thrilling finishes right up until the final legs of each race.

A big thank you to Stuart Dawes for his excellent work as PRO, ensuring smooth race management. Appreciation also goes to Ted Stevens, who traveled from Launceston to observe, and to Ray Joyce, who captured some fantastic photographs of the event.
