2025 A Class Australian Championship - Day 1
The 2025 International A Class Australian Championship got underway today at Montrose Bay, Hobart, Tasmania, with a competitive fleet battling it out in light challenging conditions. The event saw a mix of experienced champions and emerging contenders taking to the water for the opening races.
Montrose Bay delivered a classic Tasmanian summer day, with light winds that provided tricky racing conditions. The light breeze made for some challenging, tactical racing, with pressure changes keeping sailors on their toes. With a fleet largely dominated by Tasmanian sailors, many of whom have been fine-tuning their boats in the lead-up to this event, the competition was fierce from the outset.
Favourite Faces Early Pressure
Past champion Lisa Blackwood came into the event as the favourite, having won the title in both 2022 and 2023. The opening races saw a strong start from local sailor Michael Hickman, who took the early lead and left Blackwood chasing a race win. It wasn't until Race 3 that Blackwood found her stride, claiming her first victory of the day. From that point forward, she dominated, securing seven more wins out of the 13 races sailed, propelling her into the overall lead by the end of Day 1.
The championship is shaping up to be a hard-fought battle over the coming days with the event wide open with two days of sailing to complete.
Looking Ahead
With more races scheduled for Day 2 and conditions expected to remain light, competitors will need to maintain consistency and sharp decision-making to stay in contention. The battle for the top spot is wide open, and as the championship progresses, every race will count.
Stay tuned for more updates as the 2025 International A Class Australian Championship continues at Montrose Bay!
