IOM World Championship 2024 - Expressions of Interest

Sep 12, 2023

Expressions of Interest are invited for all ARYA affiliated skippers to attend the 2024 International One Metre World Championships. The regatta will be held in Gladstone Queensland between 20 October and 28 October 2024

To register your interest in participating, please complete the ARYA Expression of Interest form. The Expression of Interest form can be accessed by clicking on this link.  Expressions of Interest will close at 2200hrs 19 April 2024.

To assist you in making your decision whether to apply, the following information should be considered.

1.      How are places allocated to all the countries for IOM World Championships?
The process for selection for IOM World Championships is described fully in the IOM ICA Championship Regulations. These can be found on the IOM ICA website. We recommend that you read how the process works by downloading the 2023 IOMICA Class Championship Rules.

Briefly, there are several rounds of offers, commencing with offers to all IOM ICA member National Class Associations.

2.      How many places will be available for Australian skippers?
The number is unknown at this point in time and will depend on how many first round places are declined by the member NCAs.

If all NCAs accept their allocations, Australian numbers will be restricted. If other NCAs reject their first-round offer, Australia may receive additional places in the subsequent rounds.

3.      How will the ARYA select Australian representatives?
The ARYA Ranking Policy describes the process for selection of Australian skippers. The policy can be read if you click on this link and read the ARYA Ranking Event Policy 2021 – Section 4.

The ranking period for selection opened on 20 April 2023 and will close on 20 April 2024. A total of 4 ranking scores are counted towards a skipper’s ranking points. These are:

·       One National Championship result (Adelaide March 19-22 2024)

·       One State Championship result and

·       Two Regional Event results.

A list of ARYA ranking events can be found on the ARYA website under the “Events” menu. Skippers who have submitted an Expression of Interest form will be offered places in order of their ranking at the close of the ranking period.

4.      What is the Entry Fee and what does it include?
The budget for the event has not been finalised. Previous experience and early calculations appear to indicate an entry fee in the vicinity of $800 for the event.

Included in the Entry Fee are:

·       Welcome Function and Opening Ceremony.

·       Party Night – Gladstone Harbour Cruise.

·       Subject to sponsorship: A Gladstone region sight-seeing tour on the lay day.

·       Closing Ceremony Function.

·       Secure Onsite Boat Storage facility.

·       Lunches, Water and Refreshments.

·       The opportunity to sail in a world class event with world class skippers.

5.      When is the Entry Fee paid?
The Entry Fee is to be paid on acceptance of your place in the regatta.

6.      Will there be a waiting list?
All skippers who submit an Expression of Interest form and are not selected will be placed on a waiting list in order of their ranking place.

7.      Can Expressions of Interest be withdrawn?
Yes - in writing to secretary@arya.asn.au

An IOM World Championship was last held in Australia in 2005. These events do not come around frequently at all. The opportunity to participate in a world class event with world class skippers can be a once in a lifetime experience for many Australian skippers.

The ARYA have appointed an IOM World’s Organising Committee who have been working diligently to prepare a first-class regatta. The ARYA acknowledges the work the committee have done to date and wishes to thank each of the committee members for their contributions.
