Eagleby Hosts 2022 Queensland Marblehead State Championship

Sep 19, 2022

The newly established Eagleby Radio Yacht Club hosted the 2022 QLD Marblehead State Championship over the weekend of 17-18 September which saw a fantastic & competitive weekend of Marblehead sailing.

The Eagleby Radio Yacht Club lead by club President Andrew 'Arco' Wilson did an excellent job with organising the event including sausage sizzle and drinks for competitors after racing.

With the club offering multiple course areas across the vast lake the sailing conditions were ideal for the event and the fleet sailed in light to medium wind strengths sailed mostly with A rigs with the B rigs only coming out of the box late on day two.

Racing was extremely competitive and sailed with good spirit. At the top of the leaderboard was the trio of Scott Condie (NSW), Greg Torpy (QLD) & Andrew Reid (VIC) all sailing their BG design Grunge. The trio traded blows all weekend but at the end it was the Skill of Scott Condie that had him at the top of the leaderboard after the final race of twenty six, and crowned the 2022 Queensland Marblehead Class State Champion with Torpy & Reid second and third respectively.

Doug Allen mixed it with the trio sailing his Red Ant F6 but wasn't able to break through their dominance, finishing fourth overall with Steve Sedgmen and Pete Sherwood not far behind. Jimmy Mee also sailing an F6 is new to the Marblehead class and finished mid-fleet for his first Marblehead championship.

Special mention must go the ACTs Steve Sedgmen sailing his new self designed and built Marblehead with very good results so watch this space for another great Australian design in the making.

Big thanks to all of our volunteers led by the experience and expertise of Queenslands favourite PRO Billy Clancy.
