SA A Class State Championship

Aug 24, 2021

A small fleet of A Class yachts contested the 2021 SA A Class State Championship at Tiranna Way, West Lakes on 22nd August 2021.

blusteryaclassSadly only 6 starters for the 2021 A Class State Championships won convincingly by Tim Arland with 8 bullets, Greg Peake had 2 wins before boat breakdown curtailed his racing and Jeff Watson only lasted one race longer.  Other heat winners (one each) were Bob Whitehead in his excellent and new to him Sword and Chris Juttner.

The breeze was northerly varying to the NW and requiring a few minor course changes, but only using the buoys already set.  Everyone started with A rigs but the breeze increased as forecast and there were rig changes to a mixture of small jib only (Alan Bessell), small main with smaller jibs (Tim Arland, Jeff Watson and Chris Juttner) and persisting with A rigs (Greg Peake and Bob Whitehead) because they had no choice.  As you’ll see from Johan’s movies of races 9 and 10 the breeze moderated enough for Bob’s A rig to be dominant, at least for a while and his new boat obviously has great promise.

readyforlaunchMany thanks to Norman Wallis as PRO, Ian Dowsett as assistant and helpers Dean Crichton and Ecio Marcel and tug and tablet driver and photographer Johan Bergkvist.  Everything went very smoothly and we chose not to deploy the dinghy, and did not need it.
