Reidy Tops TAS Marbleheads in a Wide Range of Conditions
Sailing his new Grunge Marblehead, Victoria's Andrew Reid picked up twelve wins and eight 2nds from the twenty eight races sailed at the Tasmanian Marblehead Class State Championship at Montrose Bay on the weekend of 05-06 December finishing eleven points ahead of Scott Condie (NSW).
Day one saw the sailors go through a range of rigs from A, B, C1 & C2 (for most) and Reid kick started his regatta win hopes with seven wins from the first eight races and made it clear to all that he would be the man to beat. Scott Condie and Lisa Blackwood endeavored to remain close but at the end of day one Reid had jumped out to a regatta winning position.
After using multiple rigs on day one it looked like a more consistent breeze strength on day two would see the racing carried out with C rigs and after the early session with C2 a break was taken for lunch, along with the wind. With this a number of sailors took out their A rigs with full intent on putting them on but, within the space of 10 minutes the breeze was back and C2, some C3 & B2 rigs were up. The wind variation was absolutely crazy.
With the wind up again, some fantastic big wave racing was had which everyone enjoyed. The locals finally managed to put some wins on the board with race wins to Lisa Blackwood, Rod Marshall & Kyle Stewart.
While Condie made a charge and cut Reid's lead substantially, the dominance of the first day had positioned Reid to be able to fight off all challenges remaining consistent with top three places in most races and finishing championship winner on 41pts ahead of Scott Condie on 52pts with Lisa Blackwood third on 100pts.
Thanks from the Risdon Brook Radio Yacht Club go to the mainland visitors, Andrew Reid, Scott Condie, Rob Nowak and Bill Wright for making the time to come and support both the club and the class and they look forward to reciprocating the favour in the future.
In addition, thanks must go to those who helped make the weekend possible. Mike Hickman, RO for the weekend conducted the racing in an exemplary fashion, ensuring racing continued in quite challenging conditions. Les Hansen and Anne Cole-Cook, recording the finish orders and Phil Turnbull on the rescue boat - who had a very busy weekend (particularly day two).
Thanks to Kyle Stewart for details to assist this report.
