Yellow Eyed Canberians Give NSW 10R Title a Good Crack!

Nov 16, 2020

The forecast for the 2020 NSW Ten Rater Championship sailed over the weekend of 07-08 November was for a black southerly on Saturday and a good sou’easter on Sunday. PRO for the day Lynn Kreibig, called 14 boats to the water at 10.00. We knew it was coming but weren’t sure when.

As predicted, it built and built with most competitors using every rig they had in their arsenal to ensure control of their boats. There was plenty of boat speed from the serial offenders. Those who had the smallest sail on, generally handled it the best.

By all accounts, the Canberra guys had fun on Friday night with a nice shade of yellow in their eyes, but it had no effect on their sailing the next day. Steve Sedgmen in his own design and Mark Newman in his Trance were just down right fast! Joey Roos was fast, but not always able to get himself into the right position.

Phil Page, AJ Roberts, Andy Holly all had good speed but with the wind strength and Kogarah Bay conditions, it sorted out the boats and their reliability.

At the end of day 1, it was local Scott Condie with a slender lead from Sedgy, followed by Newman, OJ, Pagey and AJ Roberts.

For a change, we all decided to go to Taren Point Bowling Club which yet again, didn’t fail to put on an awesome Chinese meal and a few cool ones.

Sedgy the wedge was giving it a shake and was only warming up when Beetle ordered the Uber to go home ‘cause he was tired. He must be getting old that guy.

Arriving Sunday morning and we were met with wind in the same direction as yesterday, but 15 knots less. NSWRYA President, Colin Court was the P.R.O. for the day and racing started at 10a.m. sharp.

20201116_NSW_10RThe racing over the day was very courteous and everyone was happy to let each other go at some stage. It makes me wonder why we can’t sail like this all the time. Everyone is way happier and we all get on much better because of it. Perhaps forgetting about the Ranking system is good!!!!

In the end, Scott Condie 1st with Steve Sedgmen in 2nd and Mark Newman in 3rd. The overall point’s difference between the first 3 does not reflect the closeness of the racing. Full results are below.

A big thank you to Lynn for the hard work he had on Saturday and Colin on Sunday.

Big thanks to those who travelled, Mark, Steve, Phil, Rusty, Joseph, Lynn and Paul. Yet again, our volunteers Ralph, Ron, Terry, Skinny Pete, with Big Pete and Ted assisting both days. A big rap for them for assisting us enjoy our sport. OJ for the HMS Scoring, Scott Condie for course laying and Club selection.

Also, to KBSC for allowing us to hold the event here.

Until next time
