Ian Hayden 10R Trophy and GP R1 at Kogarah Bay

Jan 22, 2020

On the weekend of the 18th & 19th of January 2020, the Ian Hayden 10R Trophy was held at Kogarah Bay Sailing Club and hosted by Kogarah Bay Radio Yacht Club.

This regatta is round one of the NSW 10R GP series and is held annually to celebrate the considerable contribution made by the late Ian Hayden to radio sailing, the NSWRYA and KBRYC.

This is a much-anticipated event and is the first ARYA 10R ranking regatta for the year in NSW. It’s also the last major NSW 10R regatta before the ARYA Nationals to be held at Yarrawonga in Victoria and gives skippers a chance to sharpen their skills before the three-day ARYA event to be held from the 16th to the 18th of February.

Competitors travelled from Lake Macquarie, Canberra, Queensland and Melbourne as well as the local Sydney and Northern Mariners fleet. With fifteen entries the race committee decided to run a single fleet.
Sydney was experiencing some rain for the first time in many weeks, so showers were expected on Saturday with strong S to SE winds. At least it wasn’t smoky, dusty and hot. Scott Condie set a windward and return course with a gate at the leeward end. Ron Moon, PRO for the day got racing underway just after 10am. All skippers elected to use D rig. The wind remained strong all day but eased enough after lunch to use B and C rigs for a few races. Peter Cleary was kept busy in the boat picking up boats with technical problems.

Andrew Reid held a slim lead at lunchtime but by the end of the day after seventeen races Scott Condie was leading from Andrew Reid followed by Mark Newman in third, Phil Page fourth, Owen Jarvis fifth and Allen Roberts sailing Ian Hayden’s Diamond in sixth.

Most of the skippers then adjourned to Taren Point Bowling Club for a beer, a chat and a feed.

Sunday morning was a different day entirely. At 10am there was not a breath of wind, so racing was delayed for half an hour until a nice 6 to 10 knot SE breeze filled in. It was a perfect A rig breeze and stayed steady all day.

PRO for the day Neil Webb got racing underway at 10.40 and kept the racing going at a brisk pace. Terry McLeod was driving the rescue boat and had an easy day compared to Peter Cleary’s day on Saturday. A further 14 races were completed for a total of 31 for the regatta. See the full results below.

The Trance design filled the first four places, followed by two Diamonds. The 10R scene in NSW has plenty of tough, but fun competition and it was good to welcome Todd Sharp to Kogarah Bay for the first time. The fleet would have been even stronger if a couple more of the regulars had been there. Get well Andrew so you can join us at the next regatta.

KBRYC Secretary Wayne Keavy was the MC for the presentation ceremony and welcomed Ian’s wife Barbara, and son Brett to award the trophy and medals. Thankyou Barbara and Brett, we really appreciate your continuing support of this annual event.

First, second and third places will have their names engraved on the trophy.

These events don’t happen by themselves so thanks to the following KBRYC Members for helping to make the regatta a success. Ron Moon, Peter Cleary, Ted Gay, Ian Taylor, Neil Webb and Terry McLeod. Thanks also to KBSC for catering the lunches on both days. And of course, thanks to all the competitors.

The next NSW 10R ranking event is the Mazda Trophy to be held at Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club on Saturday the 18th April 2020. Entries are open now.
