NZRYA/ARYA Announce Inaugural IOM Oceania Regional Championship

After months of preparation and collaboration between the radio yachting associations of two nations, the IOM Oceania Regional Championship is born!

\images\oceania_logo_lgThe New Zealand Radio Yachting Association (NZRYA) in conjunction with the Australian Radio Yachting Association (ARYA) are pleased to announce the inaugural International One Metre Class Oceania Regional Championship to be hosted by Pegasus Radio Sailing Club at Lake Pegasus, Christchurch, New Zealand in early December 2020.

This event, endorsed by the International Radio Sailing Association (IRSA) and supported by the International One Metre International Class Association (IOMICA) is to be held between 2nd  – 5th December 2020 and is the first major IOM event to be hosted by either of the two countries since the 1997 IOM World Championship held in Wellington (NZL) and the 2005 IOM World Championship held in Mooloolaba (AUS) and will be a regular international event scheduled on a bi-annual basis in non-World Championship years, with the venue alternating between the two countries.

Pegasus Radio Sailing Club will be host club for the championship which will be sailed on Lake Pegasus which was chosen after consideration of a number of venues across both Australia and New Zealand and determined most suitable after hosting a successful 2019 IOM South Island Championship.


Lake Pegasus is located approx 25km north of Christchurch on the South Island of New Zealand and covers 18 hectares, is 500 metres long and varies between 100 and 200 metres wide providing 3.5 km of foreshore with five different sailing areas to cater for all wind conditions.

Entries for the 2020 event will be limited to a maximum of 60 skippers with an allocation of 30 places being awarded to the host country, 20 places being awarded to Australia and 10 guests places allocated to skippers who reside outside of the two countries. Allocation of places for the AUS/NZL skippers will be based on the current ranking systems in both countries, with ranking points awarded for participation in each countries regional events with the goal of increased participation as sailors strive to qualify.

With the 2020 New Zealand IOM Championship scheduled to be sailed at Lake Pegasus from 27-29 November, sailors can take advantage of the scheduling and enjoy a sailing feast where you will have the opportunity to take-in two IOM regatta’s making for a total of 7 days racing over a nine day period beginning with 3 days of sailing at the 2020 New Zealand IOM Championship fine tuning your skills to become razor sharp in readiness for the first IOM Oceania Regional Championship at beautiful Lake Pegasus.
