Hot IOM Fleet in Hervey Bay States
A hot fleet of 23 boats competed in the 2019 Queensland IOM State Championship hosted by the Fraser Coast Radio Yacht Club at Hervey Bay over the weekend of 19 & 20 October.
Saturday racing started with 23 skippers, fine weather, a light shifty breeze and a muddy brown lake. Ian Ash laid a challenging course for the skippers to navigate and those with local knowledge didn’t fare much better than visiting skippers. The lead yachts changed constantly, making for interesting finishes and no clear winner. A-rig conditions shifted NNE to NNW with gusts and lulls making for some challenging conditions. By lunch time B-rigs were the order of the day as nose dives ruled out A-rigs.
Fraser Coast Radio Yacht Club laid on a healthy lunch with 6” subway, fresh fruit, fruit cake and bottled water. Water was available throughout the weekend free for all skippers, to help combat with the heat and humidity, which brought on a storm and a drop of rain while dining at the local RSL.
Sunday saw light NNE winds to start, followed by heavier SE winds after lunch which in-turn continued the challenge for top position. Even brown water could not hold back the serious competitive clean sailing, with no protests over the two day event.
Provisional results saw the top 3 finishers having only 2.8 points dividing them after 15 races, allowing skippers to drop their 2 worst races.
Lindsay Walker took 3rd on 45.3 points, Greg Torpy 2nd on 45 points, and the hangover from Saturday night didn’t stop Doug Allen taking the win on 42.5 points.
Extra prizes for the top several placing finishers were donated by valued sponsors, Blades and Shades, Hervey Bay RSL, Battery World, Hervey Bay Canvas, Dave Laurie Electrical. Our club had the pleasure of local Mayor, Cr George Seymour come to the lake to see the competition in action and present the trophies.
A great thanks goes to those that organised the event including the FCRYC committee. Thanks also to those volunteers that helped run the regatta, including PRO Ian Ashe, Scorers David Black and Anne Walker. Helpers from our club, Dave, Trevor and Steve.
Fraser Coast Radio Yacht Club would like to thank all skippers for attending and look forward to hosting their next event.
