Condie Dominates NSW Marblehead States

Oct 24, 2019

Scott Condie sailing his Grunge has dominated the NSW Marblehead State Championship held at Kogarah Bay over the weekend 19/20 October.

Eleven skippers arrived to contest the most prestigious and important event for the Radio Marblehead class on the NSWRYA calendar. Andrew Reid and Rob Nowak made the trip up from Melbourne to compete against the NSW sailors. The weather was sunny and warm to hot. High tide was in the middle of the day so water depth close to the shore wasn’t a problem and a WNW breeze was blowing. This is not a favoured wind direction at Kogarah Bay but still a windward and return course was set with a gate at the leeward end.

At lunchtime on Saturday, Scott Condie sailing his Grunge was dominating and had a substantial lead. Andrew Reid, sailing another Grunge was second and Phil Page sailing a Prime Number was only one point behind Andrew in third.

At the end of the day, after 15 races Scott still had a substantial lead, he won 14 of the races sailing the very speedy Grunge. Andrew was in second place and had a race win. Phil was maintaining his third place. Rob Nowak would have to take the unluckiest sailor award. At the finish of race 13 after sailing a perfect race, he was a couple of metres from the line with a 50m lead over Scott when he was hit with a header that put his boat into irons. Scott beat him by half a boat length. I would have cried but Rob held his composure and I didn’t even hear him swear.

Unfortunately, David Mitchell and Andrew Sands spent plenty of time off the water due to technical gremlins.

Sunday started out with light testing conditions for the sailors and race management team. There was a nice 5 knot southerly blowing until just before racing started when it faded to nothing and then slowly came back in from the ESE. The breeze gradually swung to the ENE by the end of the day requiring several course adjustments. Even with the delays while the course was adjusted another 14 races were completed for a total of 29 for the regatta. Scott didn’t have everything his own way on Sunday and Andrew won 7 races, and Phil Page and Rob Nowak won one each. Well done guys, I know how hard it is to beat Scott.

\images\nswmstates2019Congratulations to all the skippers who sailed fairly and quietly all regatta.

Thanks to the KBRYC members Ted Gay, Peter Cleary, Terry McLeod, Mal Cody and Allen Roberts who gave up their time to help. I could not have run the regatta without you. Thanks also to Phil Lewis from KBSC who catered the excellent lunches.
