QLD RM Championships

2016 QLD RM TITLES – HERVEY BAY QLD 30th April / 1st May

Saturday 30th April started with a couple of light showers but soon cleared and after the registration and setting up was complete, 11 starters were ready to do battle at the Uni Lake located in Hervey Bay City. The lake had recently been cleaned by the local council after years of lobbying from the Fraser Coast Club, and they were pleased with the result. We had 11 skippers register with a number of them travelling some extra-long distances to be at the event.

SA IOM State Championships

32M

Saturday started gently ~ 10 knots from the N and built to 15-20 knots.  Sunday started at 15-20 knots from the SW and faded gradually to below 10 knots.  This range of conditions gave everyone a chance to show their expertise in all conditions.

In the end it was Andrew from Brett and Paul.  They were a clear step from the next group and a clear indication of the superiority of these sailors and the Britpops.  The event was well run by the ARCYRC and special thanks goes to Rob Cameron for PRO duties and his assistants - Graham, Phillip, Greg and others.

Graham took a number of photos for the event and they can be viewed by clicking on the photo.

SA RM Toad Cup

Conditions were light and variable from the SE with large wind shifts.  It required concentration to extract the best from the day.  Thanks to Jonno for PRO duties and Rob for assisting in the power boat with courses and the ARCYRC for organising the event.

UK 2016 IOM Ranking 1&2 Eastbourne

26138208542 69ec4d5f59 z

Well Done to Brad Gibson and Rob Walsh for winning Event 1 and 2 of the 2016 IOM Ranking season, in difficult sailing conditions they were the most consistent performers on each day, and deserved winners. there were some news names on the leader board and a return to form for a few old names and the overall entry quality is great to see.

Making good use of HMS, Jes Collier and the team from Eastbourne ran 3 large fleets which was fantastic to see on the water, with many passers by commenting on all the boats.

As with all our ranking events, it’s not only about the top skippers but also those further down the fleet and it was great to see some new faces in Pete Smith, Alistair Hodge, Dave Adam, and Rick Ford although their early skirmishes, we hope not their last!

C/QLD IOM Championship

cq16The International One Meter CQ Championships have been sailed and won in light to moderate conditions on the Gladstone Marina last weekend.

An unfavourable off shore wind direction saw the even moved from Spinnaker Park to a more appropriate racing area near the new VMR building along the western bank of the marina, allowing for unrestricted and perfect 5-10 knot breeze all weekend.

Skippers from the Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast, Bundaberg and north to the Whitsundays joined the Gladstone contingent to make a strong 21 boat competition.

WA Bink Frayne A Class Trophy

Bink Frayne MemorialThe 2016 Bink Frayne Memorial Regatta for A Class boats was sailed at Jackadder Lake on Saturday March 12. There were 10 skippers entered, but unfortunately, Roger managed to forget to put his rudder back in after arriving home from the Nationals.

The wind was a gentle 5 to 10 knot south-westerly which was fairly gusty and inevitably had plenty of shifts and downdrafts. The fleet contained three Swords, the former National Champion A1 design of Hub Bell’s and the Wombat of Graeme Howie, making it a strong, high quality fleet.

BRYC Brisbane IOM Challenge

015As always, the BRYC thanks Riversands for our venue, the BRYC club members who assisted in site preparation and the running the event, Ian Ashe for performing the PRO duties, and the skippers for their patronage.

The Eagleby venue is improving and now boasts toilet facilities and a mown grassed area on the northern shore of the lake incorporating a smaller fenced area in an attempt to keep the resident cattle of it.

There is ample space for parking. Adequate shade was provided, and with predicted temperatures in the low to mid 30’s, it was an absolute necessity.

Held at Edgewater Lake, 13th December 2015

Hosted by Albert Park Model Yacht Club

The day started with the skippers eager to get on the water with the conditions of a light nor’easter, unfortunately the breeze direction was varying too much and the first three races were abandoned, as all boat reached to the weather mark, finally the first race was completed at 10.30 am, in addition to the varying wind direction, there was another small issue with jellies, the first time in this location.vic15dec

2015 Western Australian IOM State Championships

The WA State Championships were held at two locations this year. Saturday 5 December found us at the Maylands Yacht Club for some racing on the Swan River. Open water with quite a few waves made for a different challenge. Sunday, we moved to Champion Lakes for flat water racing.

New South Wales IOM Titles 2015

NSW301This year the IOM NSW titles were hosted by the Northern Mariners Radio Yacht Club at the Scenic Kariong Gardens on the Central Coast of NSW. We had a fleet of 19 yachts front up from Clubs in NSW, QLD, Victoria and Western Australia for two days of competitive sailing.

A big thanks to Victorians Scott Fleming & Mario Gulic, Queenslanders Allan Walker and Malcolm Kemp and Western Australian Sean Wallis for travelling to our regatta Unfortunately one of the regatta favourites Craig Smith’s flight was cancelled and was unable to attend.

South Australian IOM K McPherson Memorial 2015

P1020553The K McPherson Memorial IOM event was contested on Sunday 15th November 2015 with fourteen eager starters at the first gun after a delay waiting for the wind to settle.  Greg Peake ably supported by Phillip Levi, Rob Cameron and Jack Amber were kept busy laying true courses and retrieving boats with gear failure.  The breeze strengthened after lunch and No2 rigs replaced the full size rigs that were used before lunch.
The venue at Harts Mill again proved popular and it provided local knowledge which may come in handy for the Nationals in February 2016.

TAS IOM State Championships

tasConditions on Day 1 of the State Championships were rather bleak with grey skies, light southerly winds and forecast showers. Les Hanson volunteered his services as PRO for the weekend and ran the event efficiently and with authority, thankyou Les. Thirteen skippers were entered and a day of close racing was ahead.

Past multiple State Champion Michael Hickman showed early dominance with two wins, and returning skipper Matt Gray, with a borrowed boat, on the podium for the first 4 races, including a win. Rod Jackman was sailing well in the variable conditions with a win and a couple of podiums. Ray Joyce found the groove in the afternoon with 3 wins, yours truly with a couple and Lisa Blackwood, also with a borrowed boat had a win as well.

NSW 10 Rater State Championship 2015

30nov10r1This year the state championship was hosted by Lake Macquarie Radio Yacht Club at Edwards Park, Booragul. 23 skippers turned up on Saturday morning to do battle. Andrew Reid made the trip from Melbourne and Mark Newman and Steve Sedgmen were there to represent the Canberra MYC. All the NSW 10R clubs were represented by at least one skipper.

With pending rain and 15 to 20 knot winds predicted it was looking like Saturday was going to be interesting. Instead we stayed in A rigs all day on a moderate S/SE and went looking for the sunscreen. Twas a fun day even with lumps of random weed clinging like jellyfish to the keels. At the end of the day, the “big guns” were fighting for some advantage but most of us had enough stories of bad luck and poor starts to fill a book.

WA Metropolitan Championships & Champion Lakes Cup 2015

The WA Metropolitan Championships and the Champion Lakes Cup were sailed today at Champion Lakes. The PRO for the day was Richard Fielder, and he was faced with light, variable winds which didn't settle until the middle of the afternoon. Nevertheless, Richard managed to lose only about 2 hours of sailing time, despite the lack of co-operation of the wind.

Queensland 10R Championship 2015

2The Queensland 10R Championship for 2015 has been run and won in a very comprehensive fashion.

It’s a tough day when you have to discard 3 firsts and 1 third placing for your final score, but someone had to do it, so it’s congratulations to Gary Bromley.

The wind started in from the SSE at around 15 km/hr and, although it swung around to the SE and E at times, it never let up all day with some gusts up around the 20-25 mark.

PRO Ian Ashe wasn’t that troubled setting a course, and racing got underway just after 10:00 am.

Eddie Cowell IOM Cup 2015

It was great to see a large number of skippers turn up for the EC Cup. We had 3 from Western Australia, 2 from Victoria, 6 from New South Wales and 2 from across the ditch New Zealand.

This is a hot fleet, we have a former World Champ and National Champs from both Australia and New Zealand.

The conditions were ideal throughout the 2 days, light to moderate breezes kept everyone in A-rig for the duration of the event. A course was set and the seeding racings got away almost on time.

The racing was close throughout both days. The continual slight wind direction changes made picking the right side of the start line to start from difficult; it varied from race to race. Get it right and you’re in good shape in getting to the top mark first-ish!

QLD RC Laser Championship 2015

The 2015 Queensland RC Laser Championship was won by Peter Burford after some keen racing.

The PRYC welcomed 11 starters to a really calm day at Emerald Lakes on Sunday, 26th July. PRO Bill Clancy could not get a race started until more than an hour after the advertised time and then there were only 3 completed  before the lunch break. A fourth heat was abandoned when the leading 4 boats were on the last leg and started drifting backwards. At this point, Linton Ward who had come from Cairns, was in  front having showed us all how to sail in really light weather.

After an extended break, sailing resumed in variable winds from the NW. The strength varied from near zero with occasional gusts up to about 8 knots which was enough to make many of the boats nosedive under their A rigs. Just when 2 competitors changed down to B rigs the breeze lightened again. The ‘fresher’ breezes in the afternoon suited Peter Burford, Barry Hill who finished second and Ross McKay, our lone visitor from the Sunshine Coast, who took home the Bronze medal.

Ray Nasmith won the first race then largely disappeared before winning the penultimate heat. David Page had gear trouble all day and eventually retired.

The Laser fleet wishes to thank the tireless club members and officials of the PRYC for staging another very successful regatta.

QLD EC12 Championship 2015

The weather bureau predicted 10-15kts SW swinging to SE and dropping out later in the day.

What really happened was a light Westerly which swing to the North after lunch and then dropped out around 3.00 pm. So much for science!!

For a class which has come and gone as far as the ARYA is concerned, there still seem to be a fair degree of enthusiasm for them, and 9 entries were received. Unfortunately, Yeoman had to withdraw due to ill health. So 8 skippers competed on the day.
