Southern Tasmanian IOM Championship - 2nd Apr
Eleven skippers fronting for the first event of the 2017-18 season, the 2017 Southern Tasmanian IOM Championship. A fine and sunny autumn's day with light and variable winds, mainly from the west to south to around 3 knots, slowly building during the day to maybe 5-6 knots in the afternoon. With the variable wind directions, course setting was a challenge but all races had a windward/leeward component and generally short one lap races in the lighter airs and two laps when the breeze was settled. Despite the efforts of the awesome foursome on Saturday, there were still a few victims to strands of weed, and a few boats getting caught in the weed banks as well.
TAS Herb Tyson Memorial Trophy for A Class- 17th March
A small fleet of 7 boats for the rescheduled Herb Tyson Trophy for A Class for 2016. Conditions were ideal at Montrose Bay with a sunny cloudless sky, an incoming tide, and a steady 3 to 6 knot northerly on arrival which slowly eased with patches of lighter conditions throughout the morning. Of the seven boats racing, one was not included in the results due to a measurement issue, however for his first go at the controls of an A Class, Ray Joyce sailed remarkably well. Veteran skipper Michael Hickman dominated the morning with 3 wins, 2 seconds and a third. Tank Walter also sailed well with 4 podium placings including a win in Race 4. Cliff Eaves was on the podium a couple of times and the Silver Fox Peter Darcy not having one of his better days but notching up a win in Race 6. Ray Joyce, although not in contention for the points, took a victory in Race 2 with a couple of podium finishes as well, and Kyle Stewart was up there with a couple of minor podiums.
TAS IOM Championships - 12/13th November
2016 Tasmanian IOM Championships
The 2016 Tasmanian IOM Championships were held over the past weekend in very tricky and testing conditions. PRO for the event was Les Hanson, assisted by yours truly on both days and Commodore David Murfet on Day 2. With a low pressure system parked off the east of Bass Straight, winds were light and patchy from the south to southeast and conditions cool and overcast, but dry for Day 1. With the forecast similar for the whole weekend, the regatta was going to test skipper's pond sailing skills. We can't have champagne sailing all the time!
TAS IOM State Regatta - 30th October
The 2016 Tasmanian State IOM Regatta was sailed in what can only be described as testing conditions. The BOM forecast was for 15 to 25 knot northerlies strengthening to 20 to 30 knots and swinging to the northwest by noon, however with the Brook in the lee of Mt Direction, this was a recipe for some challenging racing with plenty of shifts and a few holes. It was quite warm for Hobart at this time of the year with mid 20’s temperatures and with colder water temperatures, the wind wasn’t “sticking to the water” as Bucko from 18 Footers TV would suggest, adding to the fluky and variable conditions. Prior to racing, wind strength was around the 10 knot mark or there abouts, stronger in the puffs, giving skippers the dilemma of rig choice. Wisely, all skippers opted for the No. 2 Rig.
